GATOR
Gator Lee, the designer and visionary of Hillbilly was raised in a small town outside Charleston, SC. Although, always appreciative of country culture and style, he often found himself passing the time dreaming of California. So with his mind set on the big city, while his heart ever fixed on his southern roots, he decided to move to Los Angeles.
LA proved to be an awakening for Gator’s artistic talents, as he enjoyed creating art in a wide array of areas, whether it be necklace designs, combining work shirts with vintage patches or restoring pieces of furniture he would find along the road. After joking with a friend about being compared to a 'Rockabilly' he replied more like a 'Hillbilly'. Within an hour he had created the Hillbilly logo and the vision was born. His line has been worn by Jessica Simpson along with other celebrities and featured on MTV’s "Punk'd". Hillbilly is a blending of his southern roots and urban experiences.
STEW
Gator and Stew met while working together in Los Angeles. Their common bond of the
South made them fast friends. One night Gator showed Stew some of his Hillbilly Star
clothes, and even gave him a hat. A few weeks later Stew approached Gator about his
clothes and asked if he could help, and a partnership was born. If Gator is the creator and
visionary Stew is his motivator and sounding board.
Stew Tanner grew up in Southern California, but was born in Paducah Kentucky. He never really forgot his Southern roots, while growing up on the beaches, hills, and mountains of California. His love of the outdoors, developed by his uncle in the streams and lakes of Kentucky as well as Tennessee, matured in the vastness of the Golden State. Stew’s surf, skate, and snowboarding lifestyle can be seen in the clothes and hats of Hillbilly Star.
